INSiGHT Scans

What is the Central Nervous System?

While traditional medicine often focuses on symptoms or visible findings on tests like blood work or MRIs, Pediatric Experience Doctors use advanced technology called INSiGHT Scans to evaluate something even more important — how your child’s nervous system is functioning. The nervous system is the body’s master control system. Made up of sensory, autonomic, and motor divisions, it coordinates every movement, organ function, emotion, behavior, and thought. Simply put, it acts as the body’s air traffic control system, directing how everything works together. As cell biologist Dr. Bruce Lipton explains: “The function of the nervous system is to perceive the environment and coordinate the function of all other cells.” Many families spend years supporting gut health, immunity, movement, or development through therapies — yet the nervous system connects all of these systems together. The autonomic nervous system runs the body automatically. Think of the core functions parents watch most closely in children: eating, sleeping, digesting, and moving. When this system is balanced, these functions work smoothly. When stressed, challenges often appear. INSiGHT Scans allow us to safely measure how well your child’s nervous system is performing these essential jobs.

How Does It Work?

The nervous system functions as a two-way communication system.

  • Sensory nerves send information from the body to the brain.
  • Motor nerves send instructions from the brain back to the body.

For healthy development, these signals must move quickly and clearly. During early childhood — when the brain grows rapidly — proper communication is especially critical. When stress or interference affects these pathways, communication slows, and symptoms may begin to appear. That’s why evaluating nervous system function can provide insights far beyond standard growth charts or symptom-based exams.

What Do the INSiGHT Scans Look For?

INSiGHT Scans help identify signs of subluxation and dysautonomia, which reflect stress and imbalance within the neurospinal system. These scans help answer two important questions:

  • How severe is the stress pattern?
  • Where in the nervous system is it located?

You can think of the nervous system like a home’s fuse box. When stress builds in one area, certain body functions may struggle. Identifying these patterns early allows care to be proactive — often before symptoms worsen. Common signs of a stressed nervous system may include:

  • Colic or excessive crying
  • Frequent tantrums or meltdowns
  • Motor or speech delays
  • Sensory or emotional regulation challenges
  • ADHD- or anxiety-related struggles

Across all ages, many of these challenges share the same root issue: a nervous system stuck in stress mode — what we call The Perfect Storm.

NeuroThermal Scans

NeuroThermal Scans are quick, safe scans that can be performed on infants, children, and adults. These scans evaluate how well the autonomic nervous system regulates major body systems such as digestion, immunity, hormones, and sleep. They are especially helpful for children experiencing concerns like reflux, constipation, ear infections, allergies, or sleep challenges.  Patterns on the scan may show areas of tension, imbalance, or long-standing stress within the nervous system, helping doctors understand where support is needed most.

NeuroSpinal EMG Scans

The NeuroSpinal EMG Scan measures muscle and nerve tension along the spine, offering insight into neurological tone and development. Many developmental challenges — including sensory processing difficulties, ADHD, anxiety, and coordination issues — are connected to altered nervous system tone. Three common scan patterns may appear:

  • Raging Bull: nervous system stuck in fight-or-flight (hyperactivity, sleep or behavior challenges)

  • Drunken Bull: coordination, focus, or communication struggles

  • Raging Drunken Bull: combination of both patterns

Because children’s nervous systems are highly adaptable, positive changes are often seen quickly as balance improves. Key EMG scores help evaluate:

  • Overall nervous system energy
  • Pattern organization
  • Right-to-left balance

Together, these measurements provide valuable insight into brain and developmental function.

Heart Rate Variability (HRV) Scans

HRV Scans provide a big-picture view of nervous system health by measuring adaptability — one of the strongest indicators of resilience. Healthy nervous systems shift easily between activity and relaxation. Many children today, however, show signs of being stuck in stress mode with reduced recovery capacity. HRV scans commonly reveal:

  • Sympathetic dominance (fight-or-flight activation)
  • Reduced adaptability or energy reserves

These findings often relate to challenges with sleep, focus, emotional regulation, and anxiety. As care progresses, improvements in HRV frequently mirror improvements families notice at home.

Putting It All Together

Each INSiGHT Scan provides valuable information, but together they create a complete picture of your child’s nervous system health. Rather than chasing symptoms, these scans help us understand the underlying stress patterns affecting development, behavior, digestion, sleep, and overall wellness. The nervous system truly guides every function in the body — and like any hardworking system, it can become overwhelmed. Through personalized neurologically focused chiropractic care, families often see reduced stress patterns and improved regulation over time. Request an appointment with us today to get started!
